  The will of Thomas Bensley, yeoman of Dunston was dated 12 August 1555. The principal heirs were to be his sons William and James, who were to receive tenements and lands in East Carlton and adjacent Ketteringham. His wife Agnes had their use until her death or remarriage. No daughters or sons-in-law were mentioned but a small bequest to the poor of East Carlton was included. The most significant bequests were: I give to Symon Benslen my belchilde a cowe . . . I give to Agnes Benslen his sister one cowe and I will thees two neate be at my wiffes assignment to the behofe of thees my two bellchildern until they shall come to the age of xvii yeares . . . I give unto all other of my belchildern not before specified . . . a shepe.
