  He was one of the last barons to swear allegiance to King John, and one of the first to take up arms against the king. He was one of the 25 Magna Charta Sureties. During he reign of Henry III, he fought against the king at the Battle of Lincoln in 1217 for which he lost his lands. They were later redeemed and he became a supporter of the king.
