  Many sources list Robert Whitney as the father of Thomas Whitney, thus linking the Whitneys to royal ancestry. This has been proven false. Donald Lines Jacobus called the line into question in 1933, and it was completely disproved by Paul C. Reed in 1994. In 2006, Robert Leigh Ward and Tim Doyle traced his ancestry through a cadet line.
